It depends where abouts you live in this world as to what you call them. Here in New Zealand we call them gumboots. In England (where my parents come from) they are called wellingtons or wellies for short and now I have discovered in the USA they are also called muck boots. There are some people who refer them as sea boots as well. However where ever you may be these boots can be used for the same purpose no matter where you live. You can have comfort and protection for your feet with them.

The first pair of gumboots I remember owning was when I was five years old visiting my grandparents in Cornwall, England with my older brother and mother. My grandparents had a farm in which I loved exploring its every nook and cranny. Being a profound nature lover I was for ever bringing home small creatures to look after. One day my brother, cousin and myself came across a bog in one of the fields. In this bog were bubbles coming out in the middle of it and my big brother said that there were frogs below the bubbles. Without hesitation I marched into the bog to see if I could catch myself a frog. Upon reaching the middle I bent over to see if I could see anything under the bubbles and it was then I realised the mud was over the top of my gumboots and I was still sinking. Immediately I tried to turn around but found that I could not pull my feet out of the mud. In desperation I flung my body towards the firm ground leaving my little gumboots behind to be engulfed in the sticky, gooey muck for ever more. My brother and cousin were able to pull me out of my predicament although they found it very tough as they were laughing so hard. Once my now bare feet were on firm ground I noticed that I was covered from head to toe in mud so my five year old brain made me go to the top of a hill and then I rolled all the way to the bottom to try to get rid of the smelly, dirty muck I had collected. I do not recall what sort of reception I got when I got back to the house but I do know I was stripped bare and put into a bath.

To this very day I still wear gumboots, wellingtons or muck boots for great protection for my feet. Although I do not have steel toe caps in mine I have found that the boots have saved my toes on numerous occasions. Being an avid horse lover my feet, especially my toes have been trod on more times than I like to remember by these heavy equines. One incident that I remember clearly was when my husband and I were breaking in a horse that was inclined to be a bit girth proud. My husband was holding the lead rope attached to the halter which was on the horse that I had just put the saddle on and was about to do the girth up. I had threaded the girth buckles onto the straps of the saddle when the horse decided to leap sideways onto my foot. The horse then froze but I never let go of the straps even though he had me pinned. The three of us all stood very still (I could not move as the horse had me trapped) and I was not letting go of the straps because I did not want the saddle to slip off and frighten the horse more. The next thing, I hear my husband say "I'm pleased it is your foot not mine"! Believe it or not I am still married to him! Well we somehow got the horse to move slightly without upsetting it further and I managed to get my foot out of the way and the horse girthed up snugly. Boy o boy my foot did hurt but nothing was broken thanks to my gumboots.

Gumboots, wellingtons or muck boots come in several colours and different lengths, plus the soles can have different treads on them. These boots can be used for numerous occasions but I personally use mine mainly to keep my feet warm, dry, protection from harmful objects on the ground such as prickles, nails and broken glass plus when ever I handle horses. In the days when I used to do a lot of riding I always had long boots to protect my legs from getting rubbed and/or by the stirrup leathers pinching. Plus, the boots always had a prominent heel so that if I happened to be tossed from a horse my foot would not slip right through the stirrup which could have a very nasty result. The soles only had a small tread on them so as not to get caught up in the stirrups as well. These days I wear bigger cleated soles so as to have more grip when I am walking over our land but I would never ride a horse with them on. I also use another pair that are not very long that are much lighter than the cleated ones but I cannot go into deep puddles or mud with them.

Righto, kick it in the guts, Trev...
Gumboots, they are wonderful, gumboots, they are swell
'coz they keep out the water and they keep in the smell.
And when you're sittin' round at home, you can always tell
When one of the Trevs has taken off his gumboots.

Chorus:
If it weren't for your gumboots, where would ya be?
You'd be in the hospital or infirmary
'coz you would have a dose of the 'flu, or even pleurisy
If ya didn't have yer feet in yer gumboots.

Now there's rugby boots and racing boots and boots for drinkin' rum.
But the only boots I'm never without are the ones that start with "gum".
I've got short ones and long ones and some up to me belt.
I'm never dressed 'till I've got on me gumboots.

Chorus:
If it weren't for your gumboots, where would ya be?
You'd be in the hospital or infirmary
'coz you would have a dose of the 'flu, or even pleurisy
If ya didn't have yer feet in yer gumboots.

Whenever I sing at the opera, my gumboots are a must.
They help me hit the high notes, and protect me feet from dust.
They keep the water well away, so me voice won't get no rust.
You will not never see me without me gumboots.

Chorus:
If it weren't for your gumboots, where would ya be?
You'd be in the hospital or infirmary
'coz you would have a dose of the 'flu, or even pleurisy
If ya didn't have yer feet in yer gumboots.

Now Rob Muldoon and Rowling, they haven't made a hit.
They're ruining the country more than just a bit.
If they keep on the way they're going, we'll all be in turd.
So you'd better get yer feet up yer gumboots.

Chorus x2:
If it weren't for your gumboots, where would ya be?
You'd be in the hospital or infirmary
'coz you would have a dose of the 'flu, or even pleurisy
If ya didn't have yer feet in yer gumboots.

If it weren't for your gumboots, where would ya be?
You'd be in the hospital or infirmary
'coz you would have a dose of the 'flu, or even pleurisy
If ya didn't have yer feet in yer gumboots.
